The Austrian Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired offers Braille courses in both shorthand and full Braille. Those who decide at the last minute can still join in February.
The basic form of Braille consists of six raised dots arranged in three rows and two columns. The meaning of a symbol is determined by the number of dots and their position. A minor disadvantage of Braille is its considerable space requirement, as in the basic script each symbol represents a single letter. The full Braille script combines frequent letter combinations, such as ie, sch, and eu, into a single symbol. The abbreviated Braille script allows Braille to be read just as quickly as printed text.
Under the guidance of experienced teachers, the aid organization offers one course session per week for Full text and an appointment for shorthand on, with shorthand recommended for advanced users.
Entry into the course program is possible in February and September. The program is free! Further information and registration here
