About the Guide

With the Museums Guide inklusiv, Austria is doing pioneering work. For the first time, it provides an overview of the wide range of accessibility and inclusion offerings in Austrian museums nationwide.

Making art and culture accessible and tangible for everyone is a key objective for museums on the path to an inclusive society.

The majority of Austrian museums are not only accessible but also offer a wide variety of inclusive information and educational formats. However, these offerings are often not sufficiently publicized, and there has been a lack of an overview of what Austrian museums offer and provide in this area.

The Museums Guide inklusiv closes this gap. Well-structured and accessible, it offers a comprehensive overview. The information ranges from accessible entrances, reduced admission, accessible reception, the availability of accessible restrooms, tactile orientation aids, wheelchair or walker rentals, inductive loop listening systems, and assistance dog permits to the museum's accessible website. Special offerings, such as guided tours and workshops, are further differentiated according to their suitability for people with visual impairments, hearing impairments, or dementia. Offers in plain or simple language, audio guides, multimedia guides, and listening stations complement the information.

The cultural manager is the publisher and responsible for the editorial content. Doris Rothauer. As an author and strategy consultant in the cultural sector, her focus is on the societal and social impact of art and culture. Through her consulting services and collaborative projects, she supports cultural institutions in their efforts toward sustainability, diversity, and inclusion.

The Museum Guide is available through a collaboration with ICOM Austria as well as the Essl Foundation This has been made possible.
