Europe Beyond Access (EBA) is a European cooperation project led by Skånes Dansteater and is co-financed by Creative Europe. Together with eleven leading cultural institutions, EBA pursues a clear goal: not only to support artists with (hearing) disabilities, but to recognize them as Curators, decision-makers and leaders to establish.
The project addresses deeply entrenched barriers within the European theatre and dance sector – particularly regarding access to production resources, leadership positions, and visibility. EBA therefore focuses on open calls, co-productions, and tours that are consistently led by artists with disabilities. An advisory board of ten artists with disabilities provides input on strategic decisions on an equal footing.
Between 2018 and 2024, the EBA supported more than 650 artists in 110 activities, realized via 40 new works and organized numerous industry events. All partner institutions committed to long-term reforms – for example in the areas of personnel recruitment, accessibility and committee composition.
The impact extends far beyond individual productions. The model has been adapted in more than ten countries, influenced EU cultural debates, and led to new standards, for example in subtitling, sign language, digital formats, and accessible work processes. In Sweden, the approach was implemented, among other things, in the project Viaduct further developed.
Three aspects make this project special:
- Leadership instead of symbolism: Artists with disabilities take on curatorial and strategic roles.
- Systemic change: Partner institutions commit to lasting reforms.
- European appeal: The model shapes cultural policy and practice across national borders.
Project manager Ben Evans sums it up perfectly:
„Across Europe artists with disabilities are enriching the cultural sector.“
