Experienced commentators deliver live descriptions of the images via radio receiver to the headphones, creating a vivid experience for the mind's eye and all the senses.

The scene descriptions are created in advance, scene by scene, by experienced writers to ensure a harmonious blend of audio description and the actors' performances. The scene description is then spoken live by the commentator during the performance.

To experience the audio description in the theatre, visitors need a portable radio or a mobile phone with radio reception capability and headphones. The reception frequency is 96.4 MHz. Theatre staff or an AUDIO2 technician will be happy to assist with setting up the receiver.

Self-determination and social participation are essential fundamental values for people with disabilities. The goal is therefore to ensure that blind or visually impaired people can pursue their cultural interests, such as theater, without major barriers at any time. A visit to the theater should be just as accessible and unobtrusive for people with disabilities as it is for all other theatergoers. Currently, the Theater in der Josefstadt, the Burgtheater, the Volkstheater, the Schauspielhaus, the Tanzquartier Wien, and the Altonaer Theater in Hamburg are participating in the project.

The next dates for 2026 are:

January 15, 2026 JOSEFSTADT – Jean Paul Sartre „Dirty Hands“

February 25, 2026 JOSEFSTADT – William Shakespeare „Hamlet“

11.04.2026 JOSEFSTADT – William Shakespeare „A Midsummer Night’s Dream“

May 19, 2026 JOSEFSTADT – Felix Mitterer „Zemlinski“

Further information about the program and dates can be found on the initiative's website. theater4all as well as in the newspaper „perspectives“ can be found at the Austrian Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, through which ticket reservations are also made.

Contact for ticket reservations:

Aid Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austria

Tel.: +43 1 330 35 45

theater4all@hilfsgemeinschaft.at

The theater4all project, an initiative in cooperation with the Austrian Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, enables blind and visually impaired people to enjoy theater performances and other performative events.
