Now there's also a recent study from Austria: The "Healthy Museum" research project at the University for Continuing Education Krems has investigated precisely this and confirmed initial findings: Targeted art and cultural education can improve the well-being of older people.

Around 90 percent of the population is worried about their future cognitive abilities. At the same time, research shows that up to 45 percent of all dementia cases could be prevented through a healthy lifestyle. In addition to physical exercise and a healthy diet, this also includes mental stimulation. The interdisciplinary research project "Healthy Museum" at the University for Continuing Education Krems, based at the Department of Dementia Research and Nursing Science and the Department of Art and Cultural Studies, has therefore addressed the question: Can museums become places that actively contribute to the brain health of older people?

Culture and encounters as a form of preventative care

Launched in December 2023 and funded by the Austrian Health Promotion Fund and the Vienna Health Promotion Agency, the project specifically targeted people aged 60 and over who were concerned about their memory, experienced social isolation, or had previously had little contact with museums. In cooperation with the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, the Wien Museum, the Albertina, and the Vienna Museum of Technology, specially developed educational programs were tested that combined cognitive stimulation with social participation. The Viennese district museums were also involved.

„The basic idea of the project was to utilize the beautiful spaces of our museums and combine meaningful encounters with the enriching atmosphere of art objects,“ says Univ.-Prof. Dr. Stefanie Auer, project leader and head of the Department for Dementia Research and Nursing Science at the University for Continuing Education Krems. „Because memory training alone is not right for everyone.”

A total of 68 people participated in seven four-week course cycles. Dedicated cultural mediators guided the groups through programs that made art and cultural objects directly accessible. Various methods of cultural mediation specifically promoted interaction among the participants and engaged multiple senses – without time pressure, without pressure to succeed, and free of charge.

New perspectives for practice

The findings provide initial evidence that targeted arts and culture programs can make a significant contribution to improving the quality of life and health of older adults. Social participation is strengthened, and cognitive and emotional resources are stimulated. The results open up new perspectives for the sustainable implementation of social prescribing services in practice and for better networking between healthcare and arts and cultural institutions.

More on this here

Dass ein Museumsbesuch mehr als Kulturgenuss ist und aktiv zur Gesundheit im Alter beitragen kann, darüber haben wir schon mehrfach berichtet.
