From October 22nd, the new exhibition "Down Syndrome. About us, with us" will be on display in the Community Gallery of the Vienna Museum.
In this exhibition, people with Down syndrome tell their own stories. Personal, humorous, and diverse, they offer insights from their own perspectives into their everyday lives, their school and work environments, their friendships, hobbies, and dreams. An invitation to discover new perspectives and experience encounters on equal terms.
Photos, interviews and artistic works reveal what motivates people with Down syndrome, what is important to them, what social hurdles they and their families face daily, and how they contribute their strengths, talents and creativity.
No clichés, no pity, no sugarcoating. People with Down syndrome don't need any of that – they only need what should be a given for all of us: space, support, and the opportunity to live self-determined lives, together with their families and society as a whole.
The personal stories are accompanied by essential information and facts, providing insights into educational opportunities, leisure activities, the job market, and independent living. Some things have been achieved, but much remains to be done.
The exhibition was created in close collaboration with people with Down syndrome: from graphic design and content feedback to the implementation of joint workshops. This collaboration was made possible by the Down Syndrome Vienna Association and the "I am active" association.
All exhibition texts are in easy-to-read language.
Alongside the exhibition, there will be discussions in the Community Gallery and, on November 12th, the "Talent Meets Opportunity" information fair. This event is aimed at people with Down syndrome, learning disabilities, and other cognitive impairments, as well as their families and caregivers. The focus is on information, interaction, and networking. Visitors can talk to representatives from various companies and advisory centers, learn about employment opportunities, ask questions, and make new contacts.
