Guided tours and workshops in museums that promote mental and physical health are also increasingly being offered in Austria. This is because people who suffer from limitations, whether for mental, psychological, or physical reasons, rarely visit museums unless they are motivated to do so by specific offerings.
One example is the Vienna Technical Museum, which offers dementia-friendly tours and online workshops. Museum objects evoke memories and encourage lively exchanges about special experiences and familiar activities. The interactive tours for people with dementia and their caregivers engage various senses and encourage shared conversations about the objects and their life stories.
The museum also offers dementia-sensitive, interactive online workshops – bringing the museum to your home. A dialogue is initiated with the help of photos, videos, and music. Before the online meeting, participants will receive a package of materials by mail. The contents remain a surprise and will only be revealed during the online meeting. The materials and guided activities provided break up the screen-based situation and bridge the gap between digital and analogue spaces.
